About this treatment
Most dental problems — cavities, gum disease, worn teeth — start silently, without pain. A regular checkup lets us find them while they are small, simple and inexpensive to treat, instead of waiting until they hurt.
Even with careful brushing, plaque hardens into tartar that only professional instruments can remove. Scaling and polishing clean the areas your toothbrush can't reach, freshen your breath and keep your gums healthy. It is also the moment for personalised advice on how to care for your teeth at home.

Frequently asked questions
No. Professional scaling removes tartar, not enamel. Teeth may feel slightly sensitive for a day or two afterwards, which is normal and temporary.
For most people it is comfortable. If your gums are sensitive or there is a lot of tartar, we can work more gently or use a local anaesthetic gel.
Slight bleeding is common when gums are inflamed. It usually stops within a day, and the gums become healthier and bleed less as you keep them clean.
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease, braces, diabetes or build up tartar quickly, we may recommend every three or four months.
No. We only take X-rays when they are clinically useful, typically every one to two years, using low-dose digital imaging.
